Watercraft will be provided for teams on the Sport course. Teams on the Challenge and Long courses will be allowed to provide their own canoes or kayaks, or they can arrange for rentals locally through God’s Country Outfitters (call Christian at 704-985-3020 for details and to make reservations).
No penalties will be assessed for the use of kayaks vs canoes. The course will likely involve lots of getting in and out of the boats, which is faster in a canoe. There will be some portaging required. The potential for damage to fiberglass and kevlar boats on the water will be great enough to encourage caution. In the end we think these conditions and factors will average out the difference in speed between boat types. If your team is bringing it’s own boat(s), instructions for where to drop them off before the race will be provided close to race day. Rentals through GCO will be delivered for you. GCO is offering boat shuttle services back to the finish area for teams who bring their own boats. The price for this shuttle service is $10 per boat, payable to GCO.

How do we arrange for our gear to be at the various locations on the course, or will it be bike, paddle, run or what?
I’ve never done an adventure race before, so I’d appreciate any feed back on how this aspect of the race is handled.
Thanks.

I will be sending out instructions on the Monday prior to the race detailing where to drop your boats/paddling gear as you arrive for the race. This is assuming you are racing the 8 or 12 hour courses and bringing your own boats. Your other option is to contact God’s Country Outfitters and arrange to rent a boat from them (in this case, they’ll deliver the boat/pfd/paddles for you). GCO is also offering to shuttle private boats back to the finish line for a small fee, otherwise, you’ll need to go pick them up after the race. There will be race volunteers in place to watch your boats/gear until it’s all over.
Racers doing the 4 hour course will not need to do any of this.
Thanks,
Don Childrey

Portage wheels are ok.
Kayak paddles are ok.
How far is the take-out from the put-in? See details in the race passport that you’ll get at the start line.
